Whether you're planning an intimate backyard ceremony or a meaningful moment with just your closest circle, small weddings can be just as powerful—and often more personal—than big celebrations. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you create a ceremony that’s just right for you.
1. Start with What Matters Most
Ask yourselves:
What do we want to feel during this ceremony?
Who do we want to witness our vows?
What traditions (or new rituals) feel meaningful to us?
Small weddings give you the freedom to be intentional. There are no "musts"—only what’s important to you.
2. Guest List: Keep it Heartfelt
Think immediate family, chosen family, closest friends—the people who make you feel seen and safe. A smaller guest list means more connection, flexibility, and space for authenticity.
3. Choose a Meaningful Location
Consider:
Your home or backyard
A local park or beach
A favourite café, gallery, or Airbnb
A quiet forest trail or community space
You don’t need a big venue for a big moment—just a place that feels like you.
4. Your Ceremony: Make It Yours
Working with me as your officiant means we’ll create a custom ceremony that reflects your values, relationship, and dreams. You can include:
Personal vows
A unity ritual (like handfasting, candle lighting, or a family blending moment)
Involvement from guests (a group blessing, readings, musical moments)
I'll guide you through it all. No scripts. No fluff. Just a ceremony that feels deeply you.
5. The Details (That Make It Special)
You might still want:
A bouquet or boutonnière
A meaningful meal or picnic afterward
A photographer (more on that below!)
A playlist for dancing in your living room or garden
Pick and choose what adds joy—not stress.
🎮 Photographer Tip: Consider hiring a photographer who gets your vibe—someone who can capture the feelings, not just the faces. Look for a documentary-style or candid-focused photographer who will notice the tears, the laughs, the in-between glances. You can still do a few posed shots if you’d like (just to say you did it!), but let the rest be natural. It makes a world of difference.

6. Legal Considerations
Don’t forget:
Apply for your marriage license in advance
Bring two witnesses (over age 18)
Plan a few minutes for signing the registry
I'll walk you through every step and make sure your marriage is legally registered afterward.
7. Celebrate Your Way
Small weddings can be:
A morning elopement followed by brunch
A sunset vow exchange with champagne and cake
A weekend gathering with games, music, and a shared meal
There are no rules. Make it yours.
Planning support is always included when you book with me. Whether you’re wondering when to cue the music, what to say in your vows, or how to include your kiddo in the ritual—I’m here.
